Today I am reading "The Name Jar" written by Yangsook Choi
The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi follows Unhei, a young Korean girl who moves to the United States and struggles with fitting in at her new school. To avoid her classmates mispronouncing her Korean name, she decides to choose an English name, but as she navigates the pressure to assimilate, she learns the importance of embracing her cultural identity. Eventually, she shares her real name, and her classmates appreciate it, helping her gain the confidence to be herself. This story is relevant to mental health as it explores themes of identity, belonging, and self-acceptance. It highlights how the pressure to conform can affect self-esteem and create inner conflict, emphasizing the importance of embracing one’s true identity for better mental well-being.
