On February 20, 2025, Teal Saguaro Wellness in Dublin, Ohio, hosted a CEU Luncheon and social networking event for Central Ohio mental health professionals. The event, titled “Supporting Clients in 12-Step Recovery”, was designed to offer valuable insights, continuing education, and networking opportunities for those in the mental health field.
The luncheon, which was free to attend, featured a presentation by Michelle Risser, LISW-S, a seasoned mental health professional with over 20 years of experience. Michelle’s presentation focused on practical strategies for supporting clients navigating the 12-step recovery process, a critical area for many mental health providers. Attendees had the opportunity to earn 1.5 CEUs by participating in the event and completing the required evaluation.
A Warm Welcome and a Valuable Presentation
Kaela Rae Vance, LPCC-S, the host of the luncheon, welcomed attendees to Teal Saguaro Wellness, her private counseling practice. Kaela, a therapist specializing in grief and trauma, has extensive experience working with individuals facing anxiety, depression, and PTSD. She set the stage for the event, emphasizing the importance of professional development and support for mental health providers, especially those working with clients in recovery.
The spotlight then turned to Michelle Risser, LISW-S, who presented her session on “Supporting Clients in 12-Step Recovery”. Michelle, who has a rich background in mental health work, including experiences with drug and alcohol counseling, trauma, and EMDR Intensive therapy, shared her insights into the principles of 12-step recovery and the critical role mental health professionals play in helping clients stay engaged in their recovery journey.
Key Takeaways from the Luncheon
During the presentation, Michelle outlined several key objectives to help attendees better understand and support their clients in recovery:
Understanding the Key Principles of 12-Step Recovery: Michelle provided an overview of the core principles behind 12-step programs, highlighting how these principles can be integrated into mental health treatment to support long-term recovery.
Developing Strategies for Empathetic and Effective Client Support: Attendees learned practical approaches to fostering empathy and providing effective support that resonates with clients. These strategies are essential in building trust and engagement in the recovery process.
Identifying and Addressing Common Barriers to Recovery: Michelle addressed common obstacles that individuals in 12-step recovery face, such as relapse, isolation, and emotional setbacks, and discussed methods to help clients navigate these challenges.
The event was an excellent opportunity for both new and seasoned therapists to gain deeper knowledge and tools for working with clients in recovery. The luncheon fostered an open and collaborative environment, where professionals could discuss challenges, share experiences, and learn from one another.
Networking and Social Opportunities
In addition to the valuable learning experience, the luncheon also provided networking opportunities. Attendees were able to connect with other mental health professionals, share insights, and explore potential collaborations. These connections are vital in building a supportive community of professionals committed to mental health and recovery.
As part of the event, attendees were treated to lunch from McAlisters Deli. The food and refreshments allowed attendees to relax and enjoy the event in a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere.
