Teal Saguaro Wellness was honored to be represented this week as Kaela Rae Vance, LPCC-S, spent time at JobsOhio leading an important and often overlooked conversation: how grief shows up in the workplace.
This impactful session created space for reflection, awareness, and honest dialogue around a topic that many professionals experience—but few feel equipped to talk about.
Understanding Grief Beyond the Personal Sphere
Grief is often thought of as something that exists outside of work—but in reality, it doesn’t stay neatly contained.
During her presentation, Kaela explored how grief can stem from a variety of experiences, including:
Personal loss
Collective or community-wide events
Life transitions or unexpected changes
Unspoken or unacknowledged emotional experiences
These forms of grief can quietly influence focus, productivity, connection, and overall well-being in professional environments.
By naming this reality, organizations can begin to better understand the human experiences their teams carry with them each day.
The Impact of Grief at Work
One of the key themes of the conversation was this: employees don’t leave their humanity at the door when they come to work.
Grief can show up in subtle and complex ways—difficulty concentrating, emotional fatigue, withdrawal, or changes in engagement. Without awareness, these experiences can be misunderstood or overlooked.
However, when leaders and teams are equipped with the language and understanding of grief, it opens the door to more supportive, responsive workplace cultures.
Creating Space for Compassionate Work Environments
Kaela emphasized that organizations don’t need to “fix” grief—but they can create environments that allow people to navigate it with dignity and support.
This includes:
Fostering psychological safety and open dialogue
Encouraging empathy and human-centered leadership
Providing education around mental health and emotional wellness
Recognizing that healing is not linear
When workplaces embrace these principles, they create conditions where employees can show up more fully—not just as workers, but as whole people.
Moving Workplace Culture Forward
The willingness of organizations like JobsOhio to engage in these conversations reflects a growing shift in workplace culture—one that values mental health as an essential part of organizational success.
By investing in awareness and education, companies are not only supporting individual well-being, but also strengthening team connection, resilience, and long-term sustainability.
Grateful for the Opportunity
Teal Saguaro Wellness is deeply grateful to JobsOhio for their openness, engagement, and commitment to supporting mental health in professional spaces.
These conversations matter—and they are a powerful step toward creating workplaces where compassion, understanding, and well-being are part of the culture.
